Shedeur Sanders was anxiously awaiting a call during the NFL Draft, but the one he got wasn’t what he expected. At his father Deion Sanders’ home near Dallas, with family gathered around, his phone rang just moments before the New Orleans Saints made their 40th pick.

“Hi, this is Mickey Loomis, the general manager of the Saints. We’re picking you,” the caller said. It turned out to be a prank, captured in a video by Sandar’s brother, Deion Sanders Jr.
“Let’s be legendary,” Shedeur responded enthusiastically, but then the joke took a twist. “Sorry, you’ll have to wait a bit longer,” Loomis added before hanging up.
This left Shedeur perplexed. The phone he used was new, with a number shared only with NFL teams. “Nobody has that number but coaches. It’s part of the game,” he explained in the video. “They want a reaction. But I’m not bothered.”
Minutes later, the Saints chose Tyler Shough, a quarterback from Louisville, leaving Deion Sanders shaking his head in disbelief. "Wow," he remarked, clearly surprised.
Shedeur spent the evening with his brother Shilo, who played alongside him for two seasons at both Jackson State and Colorado. As the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Shedeur had his No. 2 jersey retired at Colorado recently, and many expected him to be a first-round pick.
Reflecting on the experience, Deion said, “I trust God in this situation. It’s getting tough, but we have hope.”
On Saturday morning, Shedeur took to social media, sharing, “Another day, another opportunity to play the game I love.”
This incident highlights the unpredictability of the NFL Draft and emphasizes the mental resilience needed in sports. Many prospects face similar situations, where anticipation can turn into frustration.
Expert Insight: NFL analysts note that navigating the draft process is often a roller coaster of emotions. It reflects not only talent but also how a player’s mindset can affect their journey. Mental toughness is crucial, especially for young athletes trying to make their mark.
Statistics show that in 2022 alone, over 250 players entered the draft, with only about 250 selected. This stark reality underscores the competitiveness of the league.
By focusing on maintaining a positive attitude, Shedeur Sanders exemplifies the determination that many aspiring athletes need as they seek their dreams in professional sports.
