In February, it traveled along the Gediz Vallis channel, thought to have been shaped by ancient floods. In this channel, Curiosity discovered pure sulfur, a finding that has scientists buzzing with curiosity about its origins.

Curiosity is now on its way to investigate a web-like formation called boxwork at the base of Mount Sharp. Boxwork forms on Earth when groundwater flows through rock fractures, leaving behind delicate mineral deposits as the surrounding rock erodes over ages. Scientists suspect the same process may have occurred on Mars, but more exploration is needed to confirm this.

This investigation is vital, as the conditions where these minerals formed might have once supported microbial life—if any ever existed on Mars. Curiosity aims to gather clues that could help determine whether life ever thrived there.
