UP Health System – Portage Achieves Top Safety Rating: Discover What This Means for Your Care!

UP Health System – Portage in Hancock, Michigan, has earned a top safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, a well-known national nonprofit that evaluates hospital safety twice a year. This spring, it joined 23 other Michigan hospitals in receiving the highest rating, a mark of excellence in patient protection against medical errors and infections.

Quality Director Tamar Gagnon emphasized that this achievement reflects the hospital’s commitment to safe patient care. “Our team always prioritizes patient safety,” she noted, highlighting the collective effort of their staff.

Hospitals participate voluntarily in The Leapfrog program. UPHS – Portage has been active for over a decade, completing a detailed survey each spring. Chief Nursing Officer Casey Baird explained that Leapfrog assesses various quality metrics throughout the year, which influences the hospital’s fall safety grade as well.

Last year, UPHS – Portage earned a ‘B’ in spring and ended with an ‘A.’ This improvement illustrates the hospital’s dedication to delivering safe care. Gagnon stressed the importance of a positive workplace culture in achieving these results. “Empowering our staff is fundamental to our success,” she added.

Interestingly, not all hospitals choose to take part. For instance, Dickinson Hospital in Iron Mountain opted out, resulting in a ‘C’ grade. Meanwhile, UPHS – Portage’s sister facility, UPHS – Marquette, participated and received a ‘B’ grade. Their commitment to quality care is evident, as noted in their statement about the importance of patient safety and continuous improvement.

According to recent data from The Leapfrog Group, hospitals that engage in this safety grading system are more likely to improve patient outcomes. A study highlighted that facilities with higher grades report fewer adverse events, showcasing the direct impact of transparency and accountability in healthcare.
