Rochester, MI—The Cleveland State softball team faced a tough loss against Oakland on Friday, ending the game 10-2 in just five innings at the Golden Grizzlies’ field. With this defeat, Cleveland State’s record stands at 21-18 overall and 16-6 in the Horizon League, with only two regular-season games left.
Cleveland State struck first in the third inning. Emma Gilkerson hit a double, allowing Delaney Ellis to score, putting the Vikings ahead 1-0. However, Oakland quickly turned the game around. In the same inning, they scored six runs, taking advantage of six hits and an error to lead 6-1.
In the fourth inning, Kylie Gorsuch hit her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot that reduced Oakland’s lead. Yet, Cleveland State struggled to make a comeback. Oakland responded by adding a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth, ending the game due to the run rule.
Pitcher Melissa Holzopfel experienced her third conference loss, allowing five earned runs in two and two-thirds innings. Avery Robinson pitched the remaining inning and two-thirds, giving up four earned runs.
