Polygon, a well-known gaming website, has recently transitioned to new ownership under Valnet, a company that manages over 27 brands in areas like gaming, sports, and entertainment. Just after the acquisition, some elements of the site still appeared linked to its former owner, Vox Media, while operations continued largely as normal.
To understand this acquisition better, I spoke with Rony Arzoumanian, Valnet’s head of mergers and acquisitions. He mentioned that Valnet had had its eye on Polygon for quite a while, calling it a standout “triple-A gaming brand.” The company aims to enhance its gaming presence, which also includes sites like GameRant and TheGamer.
Arzoumanian expressed optimism for Polygon, stating, “We think it has a lot of potential and could be much more.” Valnet plans to ensure the site has top-quality coverage in gaming news and trends. He emphasized that the company is committed to building Polygon for the future, aiming for growth and stronger content.
Approximately ten current staff members from Polygon are joining Valnet, including executive editor Matt Patches, who is currently leading the team. Valnet is also looking to expand its roster of writers and editors. While details on hiring were not disclosed, Arzoumanian made it clear that quality is the priority.
The transition has been challenging for some staff, with several members leaving or being laid off, including the former editor-in-chief, Chris Plante. This upheaval in the industry reflects a broader trend, as many popular gaming outlets are undergoing significant changes.
Valnet has affirmed that Polygon’s archives will remain accessible, a reassuring move considering how some past publications have had their histories erased after ownership changes. Arzoumanian confirmed that they have no plans to introduce AI-generated stories to Polygon, showing a commitment to authentic journalism.
Reflecting on the company’s future, Arzoumanian noted that he doesn’t expect drastic changes in the next year as Valnet looks to maintain and grow Polygon. This approach aligns with research showing that well-established brands can thrive when they stay true to their core values and audience.
