Government Approves Bold Climate Change Action Plan: What It Means for Liberia – Stay Updated with The New Dawn

The Government of Liberia is taking important steps to update its Climate Change Action Plan. This effort, supported by international partners, aims to strengthen the nation’s environmental policies.

Recently, a consultative workshop was held to validate updates to Liberia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The previous NDC, issued in 2020, needed revisions every five years, according to a UN report.

The revised Climate Change Action Plan focuses on key sectors like energy, waste, transport, agriculture, and forestry. Notably, it will now include industry, health, coastal zones, and fisheries, showcasing a broader commitment to sustainability.

Since joining the global climate movement in 2002, Liberia has actively worked on strategies to ensure climate resilience and sustainable growth. The new framework will guide actions from 2025 to 2030.

The workshop attracted a diverse group of participants, including climate activists, environmental experts, and government officials. Representatives from several counties, such as Bong and Nimba, highlighted nationwide involvement.

Arthur R.M. Becker, from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), emphasized that validating this five-year plan will enable Liberia to tackle climate issues and implement solutions across the country. The framework aims to prioritize initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This effort demonstrates Liberia’s dedication to aligning its climate goals with the UNFCCC and its national development agenda known as the ARREST AGENDA. Support from organizations like the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the UK Government illustrates the significance of this initiative.
