Discover Eric Migicovsky’s Game-Changing Core 2 Duo Smartwatch: Exclusive Demo of the Latest Innovation from the Creator of Pebble

Eric Migicovsky, the creator of the Pebble smartwatch, has launched a new company called Core Devices, along with two upcoming smartwatches powered by the open-source PebbleOS. In his podcast "Tick Talk," he shared insights about the development of the Core 2 Duo and the anticipated features.

The Core 2 Duo is a budget-friendly smartwatch that Migicovsky expects to ship by July 2025. He demonstrated a prototype, revealing that while the familiar PebbleOS interface is in place, essential features are still being developed. For instance, users won’t yet be able to tell the time or enjoy notifications from the watch.

This smartwatch will feature a silicone strap similar to the Apple Watch, designed for comfort and convenience. There’s also a new USB-C magnetic charger that promises easy charging.

Migicovsky believes the original Pebble team did well in their time, but he’s eager to bring fresh ideas to the Core 2 Duo and a more advanced model, the Core Time 2, expected in December 2025. This second model will boast a color touchscreen and new functionalities like watch face widgets for at-a-glance information. He also aims to improve messaging through deeper integration with Beeper, a universal chat app he developed post-Pebble.

A key interest for the Core Devices team is enhancing access to AI voice assistants. With speakers and microphones included, they could soon allow users to respond to messages via voice, particularly when linked to an iPhone, as the European Union’s Digital Markets Act encourages interoperability with Apple devices.

Additionally, Core Devices is working on expanding PebbleOS’s capabilities beyond wearables by porting it to new Bluetooth chipsets. Details about these potential new devices remain under wraps, but the ambition is clear.

On a practical note, Migicovsky addressed concerns regarding the impact of tariffs on Chinese-made products. Current duties could increase smartwatch prices by $10 to $25, but the exact effects on the Core 2 Duo ($149) and Core Time 2 ($225) are still uncertain.

This initiative marks a significant step for Migicovsky, reviving the innovative spirit of Pebble while adapting to modern market challenges. As he ventures back into the smartwatch domain, users can expect not just nostalgia but also fresh, user-focused features that could reshape how we interact with wearable technology.
