Meet the Montclair State University Graduate Transforming Cancer Treatments for a Healthier Future

When Melissa Spigelman’s best friend was diagnosed with cancer, her life took a new direction. Watching her friend endure tough treatments sparked a mission in Melissa: to find better ways to treat aggressive cancers. Now, as a graduate of Montclair State University with a master’s in Molecular Biology, she’s dedicated to changing cancer care for the better.

Melissa’s journey started in high school, inspired by a passionate biology teacher. Initially unsure where her love for the subject would lead, she never imagined she would end up in cancer research. But her friend’s diagnosis changed everything. “She’s okay,” Melissa explains, “but at what cost?” This question drives her daily pursuit for kinder, less invasive treatments.

During her high school years, she had the opportunity to join a lab led by Professor Carlos Molina. It was daunting to be the youngest one there, but she embraced the challenge. “I reminded myself, you’re here to learn,” she says. This determination led her to earn her bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2023 and continue her studies at Montclair.

Professor Molina praises her growth, saying, “She basically runs my lab. It’s unbelievable.” Melissa not only performs her own research but also mentors other students, fostering a supportive environment for newcomers in science.

Her dedication extends beyond the lab. She has actively participated in events like the Women in STEM summit and has presented her research at various conferences. These experiences empowered her to inspire other young scientists, especially those who may be introverted. Social media has amplified her message, with many high school students reaching out for encouragement after hearing her story.

Recently, Melissa ventured to Japan through a National Science Foundation program to research zebrafish. She faced setbacks but found resilience in the face of challenges. “It was very difficult lab work, and I felt like an imposter,” she recalls. However, advice from her mother helped her regain confidence: “Lead with your heart.” This mindset shift allowed her to push through and succeed.

Looking forward, Melissa plans to keep building on her achievements. She will continue working in the lab and hopes to enter a PhD program soon. “I want to take time for myself too,” she emphasizes. Melissa aims to maintain a healthy balance of work and well-being while continuing her research and community impact.
