Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray is in Delhi to meet with leaders of the INDIA opposition bloc. This group has faced many challenges lately, including the BJP’s recent wins against the AAP in Delhi and the surprising support from Sharad Pawar for Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
When asked about Pawar’s actions, Thackeray kept his distance. He remarked, “I will not talk about that. We don’t honor someone like Mr. Shinde, who split our party and the state.”
However, he did share updates on his discussions within the INDIA bloc. Thackeray met Rahul Gandhi last night and plans to see AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal later today. He warned that the “future of India” is uncertain, accusing the BJP of attempting to dismantle democracy.
Thackeray expressed concerns over election integrity, mentioning issues like voter fraud and possible tampering with electronic voting machines (EVMs). He questioned current election practices, stating, “Are elections truly free and fair? It feels like we are living in a democracy, but is it really?”
He drew attention to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, pointing out that what happened to him and others could happen again. Kumar was a key figure in forming the INDIA bloc in 2023 but returned to the BJP camp last year and faces his own election soon.
The INDIA bloc was created to unite different opposition parties against the BJP. However, internal tensions have arisen, especially towards the Congress, which has faced criticism for its interactions with smaller parties and seat-sharing arrangements. The recent defeats in Haryana and Delhi have only intensified these discussions. The Congress defended itself, with spokesperson Supriya Shrinate stating that it’s not their job to ensure other parties’ victories.
The bloc also faced scrutiny after the BJP’s success in the Madhya Pradesh elections. Leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav voiced their frustrations, and there have been talks of potential leadership changes, with Banerjee as a favored candidate.
Despite these challenges, Thackeray dismissed any talk of the bloc falling apart or reshuffling its leadership. He stated, “There are many seniors who will prepare a roadmap. The INDIA bloc has joint leadership. This is not a fight of egos but about the future of our country.”
The next test for the INDIA bloc will be the upcoming elections in Bihar. What will happen as this opposition group navigates these hurdles remains to be seen.
