Recently, Notre Dame’s athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, expressed strong feelings about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He claimed the ACC has caused “permanent damage” to the relationship with Notre Dame. This came after the reveal of the College Football Playoff bracket, which left Notre Dame out while Miami got selected.
Notre Dame plays five ACC teams each season in football, although they are only a conference member for other sports. Bevacqua’s comments sparked a response from ACC commissioner Jim Phillips. He emphasized the value of Notre Dame to the ACC, stating, “We have a responsibility to support all 17 of our football-playing member institutions.” He clarified that Notre Dame was not seen as unworthy for the playoff.
Miami will face Texas A&M on December 20, while Notre Dame’s season has ended without a bowl game. Bevacqua voiced his concerns on The Dan Patrick Show, saying he respects Miami but felt confused by the ACC’s approach. He indicated that the ACC seemed to be undermining their key partner while pushing for Miami’s inclusion.
This incident highlights the ongoing tension in college football, particularly as conferences vie for playoff spots. In the latest NCAA survey, over 70% of fans expressed dissatisfaction with how playoff selections are handled, showing that many resonate with Notre Dame’s frustration.
