Accidentally Deleted a Mysterious New Folder in Windows? Here’s How to Restore It Quickly!

Windows 11 users recently stumbled upon a mysterious new folder labeled "inetpub" after a system update. This empty folder caught many off guard, leading some to delete it without knowing its significance.

So, what is "inetpub"? It’s a folder for Internet Information Services (IIS), which helps manage web server logs. Even if you don’t use IIS, this folder may still appear. Deleting it, however, isn’t a good idea. Microsoft warns that removing the folder can create a security flaw, exposing users to potential threats.

According to Microsoft’s security update, the "inetpub" folder is created during updates to enhance security. They recommend keeping it intact, even if the IIS service isn’t active. If this folder is deleted, there’s a risk of a "link following flaw," which attackers could potentially exploit to access your system.

Satnam Narang, a senior cybersecurity engineer at Tenable, emphasized the importance of this folder. “If Microsoft indicates it’s needed for security, it’s worth paying attention to," he said.

What If You Deleted the "inetpub" Folder?

If you’ve already deleted the folder, don’t panic. You can restore it by enabling Internet Information Services. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Go to Programs, then select Programs and Features.
  3. Click on "Turn Windows features on or off."
  4. Check the box for Internet Information Services.
  5. Click OK.

After doing this, you can confirm the "inetpub" folder has returned. Narang suggests ensuring the folder has proper permissions, which is best achieved by reinstalling IIS. Once it’s back, you can uninstall IIS if you don’t need it; the folder will stay in your system.

Recent security reports highlight that maintaining system integrity is crucial. In 2023, cyber threats have continued to rise, making it more important than ever to follow expert advice on system management and updates. Keeping unfamiliar folders like "inetpub" intact can be a simple yet effective way to enhance your security posture.
