Recently, ACEN announced its support for the “Forests for Life: 5 Million Trees by 2028” initiative, led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). This national program aims to plant five million trees in various key provinces by 2028. The goal is to help sequester approximately 3.5 million tons of carbon by 2038, which is essential for reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The program will unfold in phases, starting in 2025. The first step will focus on preparing the land, mobilizing partners, producing seedlings, and establishing plantations in provinces like Ilocos Norte and Rizal. Following this, ongoing maintenance and protection efforts will take place until 2028. This structured approach aims to ensure the reforested areas thrive for years to come.

ACEN’s initiative is part of a broader collaborative effort involving both public and private sectors, including partnerships with other Ayala Group companies like BPI and Globe Telecom. This teamwork aligns with the DENR’s Expanded National Greening Program, which looks to restore roughly 6.8 million hectares of degraded land and improve the resilience of watershed areas at risk of deforestation.

This focus on reforestation is crucial in light of recent statistics. A study by the World Resources Institute revealed that deforestation contributes to nearly 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, planting trees not only helps to counteract these emissions but also supports biodiversity and strengthens ecosystems.

As these initiatives roll out, they could inspire similar programs in other countries. The collaboration reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues and a commitment to sustainable practices. As more organizations join hands to tackle climate change, the potential for a more sustainable future increases.
