Activists Claim Drone Attack on Gaza-Bound Ship Off Malta Coast: What You Need to Know

Activists aiming to deliver aid to Gaza reported that their ship, The Conscience, was attacked by drones in international waters near Malta. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition claims the incident occurred early on Friday and that they issued an SOS just after the strike.

This group intended to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Thankfully, the Maltese government confirmed that all those aboard are safe and managed to control a fire on the vessel.

In response to the attack, the coalition is calling for Israeli ambassadors to be held accountable for violating international laws, including the blockade and the bombardment of their ship. Meanwhile, the Israeli military said they are investigating the incident.

Initially, reports indicated that 12 crew members and four activists were present. However, the NGO later stated that there were 30 activists onboard. They shared footage showing the ship on fire but did not confirm if anyone was injured. The fire reportedly targeted the generator, leaving the ship powerless and at risk of sinking.

The Maltese government dispatched a tugboat to manage the fire, which was controlled after about an hour. While all crew members were confirmed safe by 2:13 AM, they declined to board the tugboat. The ship remained outside the territorial waters.

In a supportive gesture, Cyprus responded to the SOS signal by sending a vessel, though the group indicated that it did not supply the essential electrical support needed.

This incident highlights the escalating tension regarding Gaza. Just two months prior, Israel closed all crossings to the region, hindering the flow of essential supplies like food and medicine. This blockade intensified following a significant military offensive initiated by Israel after the unprecedented October 7 attack, which left about 1,200 people dead and resulted in 251 hostages.
