Boynton Beach, Fla. — The rising cost of living is hitting South Palm Beach County hard. Residents are feeling the squeeze as grocery prices soar and housing costs continue to climb. Many in the community have reached out to local news for help.
One organization stepping up is Restoration Bridge International (RBI). They are vital for families struggling to make ends meet. Recently, RBI’s Executive Director, Jason Mandle, spoke about how the organization is trying to provide essential food assistance as demand spikes, even while donations dip.
Increased Demand for Help
RBI is seeing a large increase in people seeking assistance. In just a year, the number of families they serve has more than doubled. Last year, they helped around 700 families per food drive; now it’s over 1,500. "Lines are getting longer," Mandle noted. Some clients are showing up as early as 2 AM for events that start at 9 AM. Many are working-class individuals trying their best to support their families amid tight budgets.
Community Support Makes a Difference
RBI is collaborating closely with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO). This partnership is essential for identifying areas in need of help and facilitating food distribution. PBSO generously provides warehouse space, allowing RBI to store and sort food donations.
At a recent event, RBI served over 1,000 individuals and distributed around 9,420 pounds of food. Attendees expressed heartfelt appreciation, with one parent saying, "Without this, I wouldn’t know how to feed my family." An elderly woman echoed this, sharing how important the support is for seniors on fixed incomes.
Challenges Ahead
Despite their efforts, RBI faces real challenges in keeping up with demand. Mandle explained that recent cuts from the federal government have resulted in a drop in donations. "We can help everyone who shows up as long as we have supplies," he said, noting that funding limits expansion plans.
Mandle is calling on local businesses and individuals for support. Whether through sponsorships, volunteering, or donating food, help is needed to continue serving the community effectively.
How to Get Involved or Seek Help
For those in need, RBI shares a calendar of upcoming food drives, ensuring everyone has access on a first-come, first-served basis. More details on their events or how to help can be found on their website: Restoration Bridge Events.
The Bigger Picture
Nationally, food insecurity has risen, with reports indicating that over 40 million Americans faced hunger in 2022. Community organizations like RBI play a crucial role in addressing this growing crisis, especially as economic pressures increase. The work they’re doing not only provides immediate relief but also strengthens community ties, showing how collective action can bring about positive change.
By coming together, communities can help ensure that no one goes hungry, even in challenging times.
