Seasoned journalist Etta Michael Bisong recently joined Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). He hopes to tackle climate change through political action. At a gathering in Abuja on September 5, 2025, Bisong, who is now the director of Media and Publicity for the APC Climate Change Network (ACCN), explained that his political involvement stems from understanding how development and political power are interconnected.

Climate change affects everyone. Bisong highlighted the severe impacts, such as floods and extreme weather, which many communities face daily. Food insecurity and damage to critical infrastructure are also pressing issues. He believes that while Nigeria grapples with these challenges, it has the chance to reshape its development approach through proactive climate governance.

“True climate action requires effective governance,” Bisong emphasized, stressing that environmentalists should engage in politics to amplify their efforts. He encouraged fellow activists to join him in this political journey to secure a sustainable future for Nigeria and beyond.

Citizen Greg Odogwu, the ACCN’s national coordinator, expressed gratitude for Bisong’s involvement. He has been with the APC since 2014 and describes himself as a “citizen” to inspire patriotism. Odogwu noted that Bisong’s extensive experience would be invaluable to the party, especially as they prepare for the 2027 elections.

Wuse Ward Chairman Ayuba Idi commended Bisong for choosing the APC as a platform for environmental change. He reinforced the party’s commitment to good governance and urged unity among members.

Statistics show that over 70% of Nigerians are directly affected by climate change, underscoring the urgency of effective political action. As discussions around climate governance rise globally, Bisong’s shift from journalism to politics reflects a growing trend of activists seeking to influence policy directly.
