Afghanistan Claims 58 Pakistani Soldiers Dead in Recent Border Clashes: What You Need to Know

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan are escalating. This past weekend, Afghanistan claimed its forces killed 58 Pakistani soldiers during border operations. The Taliban government accused Pakistan of repeatedly violating Afghan territory.

Earlier, Afghan officials accused Pakistan of bombing Kabul and a market in eastern Afghanistan, although Pakistan did not confirm this. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid reported that Afghan forces had also captured 25 Pakistani army posts.

Mujahid reassured that Afghanistan’s borders are secure. “Illegal activities have largely been prevented,” he stated during a press conference, although Pakistan has not confirmed any casualties from the recent clashes.

This violence highlights the long-standing issues between the two nations. Historically, there have been skirmishes along the border, known as the Durand Line, which Afghanistan does not recognize. Experts suggest that these conflicts stem from a mix of territorial disputes and claims of harboring militant groups. Pakistan alleges that Afghanistan shelters members of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, a group responsible for attacks inside Pakistan, but Afghan authorities deny these claims.

Following the clashes, both countries’ borders saw major disruptions. The Torkham crossing, a crucial trade route, was closed, affecting both Afghan refugees and trade. Reports from Chaman in Pakistan noted that residents heard jets and saw smoke from explosions, indicating the intensity of the violence.

In response to this situation, the Saudi Foreign Ministry called for calm and dialogue to ease tensions. Saudi Arabia has recently solidified its military relationship with Pakistan, underscoring its influence in the region. Qatar also expressed concern, highlighting that regional stability is fragile.

A senior Pakistani security official, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that Afghan forces fired in several areas near Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, leading to a heavy response from Pakistani troops.

As these events unfold, the international community watches closely. Both sides need to find common ground to prevent further conflict and ensure regional stability.
