A man from Hili, Dakshin Dinajpur, went missing as a child and ended up in Bangladesh, where he was mistaken for an Indian spy. His name is Jaidul, also known as Lipon Mondal. After over 40 years, he is now safe in custody in Bangladesh and will soon return home.
Recently, the political tension between India and Bangladesh heightened when rumors spread that Jaidul was spying. Villagers found him wandering and detained him, suspecting he posed a threat. Videos of the scene circulated widely on social media, showing him surrounded and questioned by a crowd.
Fortunately, the West Bengal Radio Club intervened. They were alerted by a contact in Bangladesh about the viral video. Ambarish Nag Biswas, from the club, shared, “We started verifying his identity with the help of our network.” They soon discovered that Jaidul was not a spy but rather a mentally unstable individual who had been missing since childhood.
During his questioning, Jaidul made various claims. At one point, he mentioned holding a Master’s degree from Dhaka University, but authorities found no record of this. He also talked about having travel documents but couldn’t provide them when pressed. This led to increased tension among the villagers, nearly resulting in violence.
Jaidul’s family, living in poverty, had lost hope of ever finding him. His elderly mother, Lalifa Mondal, expressed her relief and despair in a video, requesting people to treat her son kindly upon his return. “Please do not harm him. Help bring him back home,” she urged.
The Ham Radio Club is now working with local authorities to ensure Jaidul’s safe return. He is currently being cared for in Rangpur, Bangladesh, and the finishing touches on the administrative process are underway. This unique incident highlights the sensitivity involved in international relations, especially regarding misunderstandings in border regions.
The story of Jaidul resonates with many, showcasing the complex environment at borders and the personal stories that lie beneath larger political issues.
