Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Experts Investigate Bird Strike and Potential Engine Gear Failures

Investigation of the Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Key Insights

The recent crash of Air India flight AI 171 near Ahmedabad has raised many concerns in the aviation community. Sadly, this tragic incident resulted in the loss of 241 lives, with only one survivor currently hospitalized. Understanding the factors that led to this crash is crucial for enhancing safety in air travel.

Captain CS Randhawa, an esteemed aviation expert and President of the Federation of Indian Pilots, emphasizes that it’s too early to make definitive conclusions. He points out that various factors will be explored, including possible bird strikes, fuel issues, and engine faults. Many birds inhabit the area, raising concerns about their potential impact on flights.

The pilot did issue a Mayday call, but only part of the conversation was captured. Experts believe that examining the plane’s Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) will be essential for understanding the full context of the emergency. Randhawa remarks, “There are several possibilities that could have led to the crash, but we must wait for the investigation to conclude."

Another aviation expert—who wishes to remain anonymous—notes that the industry is constantly evolving. With updates in technology every few years, reactions to accidents can often be premature. “Speculation is natural but, ultimately, we need to rely on facts that will emerge from the investigation,” they said.

In response to the accident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken urgent measures to enhance safety. They have mandated comprehensive inspections for other Air India B787-8/9 aircraft equipped with GEnx engines. These include checks on fuel systems, cabin air compressors, and engine controls. Such preventative measures aim to reinforce safety protocols.

As aviation continues to adapt, the push for rigorous investigations and proactive safety measures remains strong. The impact of this crash will likely lead to significant discussions within the industry and ongoing improvements.
