AlphaEvolve’s latest research places verified correctness at the centre of its results, with the work producing proofs of correctness rather than unchecked outputs. The approach is designed to avoid the problem seen when an LLM is prompted to generate a mathematical proof directly, where it may produce a proof sketch or an argument that still needs substantial human intervention and can contain hallucinations or subtle errors.
Instead of generating the proof itself, the system uses AI to discover a structure within the proof. The validity of the final theorem depends on two parts: the correctness of the lifting framework and the verification of the discovered structure. The frameworks are sound, but verifying the structures discovered by AlphaEvolve is computationally intensive.
AlphaEvolve achieved a 10,000x speedup in verification by using sophisticated branch-and-bound strategies and system-level optimizations. The research says this speedup was the key enabler, allowing the system to explore much larger and more complex gadgets.
Even so, the final gadgets discovered were still verified using the original, brute-force algorithm, preserving the absolute correctness of the theorems.
