The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) hosted a seminar called “Environmental Governance and Sustainability Challenges in Sindh” at Beach Luxury Hotel in Karachi.
The event was well attended by environmental experts, industrialists, government officials, civil society representatives, and some participants who joined virtually via Zoom. The focus of the seminar was on the urgent environmental problems facing Sindh and finding sustainable solutions.
As the chief guest, Advisor to the CM, Dost Muhammad Rahimoon, spoke about the government’s commitment to improving environmental governance. He stressed the need for strong enforcement of environmental regulations and the importance of raising public awareness for sustainability.
Rahimoon also called for teamwork among all stakeholders to address challenges like plastic waste, marine pollution, and industrial emissions. He pointed out that air quality in many parts of Sindh is “unhealthy” to “very unhealthy,” and some water sources are unsafe for drinking.
He urged industries to adopt greener practices and take action to minimize pollution. Naeem Ahmed Mughal, the Director General of Sepa, presented the findings of their latest environmental survey, which highlighted serious air and water pollution issues in the region.
Secretary of the Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Department, Agha Shah Nawaz, discussed the Sindh government’s ongoing efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainability.
Experts at the seminar noted that Sindh, despite its rich natural assets and diverse ecosystems, faces significant environmental issues like pollution, excessive noise, and poor waste management.
They emphasized that environmental sustainability is a shared responsibility, requiring active involvement from industries, individuals, and civil organizations.
The government is implementing various initiatives to tackle these challenges, such as improving monitoring systems, enhancing waste management, protecting coastal regions, and introducing sustainable urban planning policies. Participants agreed on the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices and complying with environmental laws.
The seminar wrapped up with a ceremony recognizing the contributions of speakers and experts, who received commemorative shields as tokens of appreciation.
