Alabama State Volleyball Shines with SWAC Victory
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University women’s volleyball team had an impressive outing, winning against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff with a 3-0 sweep. This match took place on a sunny afternoon at Lockhart Gymnasium.
The Hornets (3-11, 2-0 SWAC) had a strong offensive performance, hitting .356 as a team. Meanwhile, the Golden Lions (0-14, 0-1 SWAC) struggled, hitting only .221. Alabama State showcased great teamwork, with four players contributing at least seven kills each.
Leading the charge was Taylor Williams, who scored 12 kills and boasted an impressive .571 hitting percentage. Following her closely was Kaylen Hines, with nine kills at a .538 average. Zanobia Willis also added seven kills, while Jyriah Morgan chipped in six, maintaining a solid .348 hitting percentage. The team’s setter, Kamrynn Clay, played a crucial role, delivering 39 assists and notching 11 digs for a double-double.
On the defensive side, Sierra Scanlan stood out with 13 digs. Both Willis and Williams made significant contributions with their blocks at the net. The Hornets finished the match with five team blocks and racked up six service aces, efficiently executing scoring runs to secure each set.
Alabama State started strong, hitting .560 in the first set, which led to a 25-19 win. They followed up with another victory in the second set, 25-20, and closed the match with a final score of 25-20 in the third set, aided by powerful serves from Bailee Payne and effective finishing from Williams and Hines.
For Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Haley Reeves led with 12 kills, while Samantha Newman added 10. However, their efforts fell short against Alabama State’s cohesive and efficient play.
