Multiple buildings at Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., have failed fire safety inspections. The fire marshal is now working with the university to fix these fire code issues.
Imani Norton, a senior, expressed her frustration, saying, “We’ve been dealing with this for years. It’s just now getting attention. We pay tuition, and they’re raising it—what are we really getting for our money?”
Norton has lived in the Talbert O. Shaw Living and Learning Center since freshman year. She described ongoing issues like dirty bathrooms and irregular trash collection. “It’s just basic things that should be taken care of,” another student noted.
Students shared photos with ABC11 showing problems like missing ceiling panels, broken shower heads, and old bathroom drains.
Last June, fire safety inspection reports revealed alarming violations. In the women’s dorm, there were eight failures related to sprinkler systems and fire pumps. The men’s dorm had five issues, including problems with the fire alarm system’s maintenance.
Keyshawn Richardson, a freshman, shared his disbelief about the situation: “It’s wild. We’re investing so much, and they can’t even maintain our living conditions.”
Eugene Myrick, an alumnus from the class of 1994, is also upset. He feels current leadership lacks transparency. Recently, the university president, Dr. Paulette Dillard, met with alumni and mentioned that she would be leaving soon. This announcement raised concerns about the university’s direction.
Shaw University has not yet responded to requests for comments on the situation.
