A big issue is brewing in Juneau, Alaska. Officials are warning residents about potential flooding as water from the Mendenhall Glacier’s ice dam begins to flow. The glacier acts as a barrier for a natural basin that fills with rain and melted snow during warmer months.
This isn’t just a one-time concern. Each year, heavy rains and melting snow create risks for the area. In fact, flooding has damaged homes and properties, prompting the city to act. They built a temporary levee this year to protect around 460 homes from expected floodwaters.
According to meteorologist Nicole Ferrin, this flood is shaping up to be record-breaking. Estimates suggest river levels could rise to between 16.3 and 16.8 feet. Just last year, the river hit 15.99 feet, topping the previous year’s record. Flooding has been an ongoing problem since 2011, with 2023 and 2024 seeing particularly severe impacts.
What’s causing all of this? The glacier is melting due to climate change, making it increasingly unstable. Research indicates that once the glacier can no longer hold back the water, we could see floods releasing about 15 billion gallons of water—enough to fill around 23,000 Olympic-size swimming pools.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is looking into permanent solutions to address the ongoing risk, but many residents are frustrated with the slow pace of action. They feel the community needs better protection sooner.
Historically, glacier-related floods haven’t just been a minor inconvenience. In some years, streets have been flooded, and homes have been damaged, leading to long-term displacement for some families. As climate conditions change, experts warn that these dangerous flooding events may become more common.
In the meantime, officials continue to monitor the situation closely. They’re advising residents in flood-prone areas to have a plan in place and be ready for anything. The hope is that with timely responses, communities can stay safe as they face these growing challenges.
