Aldi’s Cold Food Aisle Surprise: Healthy Coyote Rescued and Ready for a Wild Return!

On Monday, shoppers at an Aldi in Chicago got quite a surprise when a coyote wandered into the store. This unusual visitor made quite a scene as it hid in the refrigerated section, clearly not where it was meant to be.

Video footage of the incident quickly gained attention online. In the video, Chicago police officers attempt to coax the coyote out using a mop. At one point, they even try pulling it out by its tail, only for the coyote to dash back under a cold food display. It was a tense moment for the animal.

Animal control officers soon arrived and safely captured the coyote. It was then taken into custody and transferred to Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation. According to the nonprofit, the coyote was scared but unharmed. They assured everyone that they plan to release the coyote back into the wild once it is ready.

The coyote likely entered the store to escape the hustle of city life, according to Flint Creek. They believe it was looking for a place to hide from all the people. During mating season, male coyotes often wander in search of territory, so it seems this one stumbled into the wrong place at the wrong time.

Despite the stressful experience, a spokesperson for Chicago Animal Care and Control mentioned that the coyote is in good health. They emphasized that it’s a natural behavior for coyotes, especially during this particular time of year.

On social media, some people joked about whether the coyote might be available for adoption. The animal control agency humorously responded, noting that while this coyote won’t be up for adoption, there are many dogs looking for homes. As of this weekend, they had 238 dogs in need of a loving owner.

This incident serves as a reminder of how wildlife and urban life can sometimes intersect. It highlights the importance of wildlife rehabilitation efforts and the challenges animals face in city environments.
