In Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, Alejandro del Rey from Spain celebrated his first victory on the DP World Tour. He finished the final round with a stellar score of 6-under 66, making it three rounds in a row at that score. With this performance, he secured the Ras Al Khaimah Championship by four strokes.
Del Rey, currently ranked No. 308, wrapped up the tournament at an impressive 22-under par. This win came on his 70th appearance on the tour. After sinking his last putt on the 18th hole, he was joyfully doused with water by fellow Spanish players celebrating his success.
His path to this moment wasn’t always easy. Del Rey reflected on his challenges, stating, “Last year, I struggled to enjoy playing. Finishing in 20th or 30th place didn’t feel rewarding.” He committed himself to improving and was determined to turn things around. He often played alongside friends who had won, and he believed he could achieve that, too.
This weekend at Al Hamra Golf Club, he played flawlessly, avoiding any bogeys. He began the final round two shots ahead of the competition and quickly extended his lead. After making birdies on the first three holes, his advantage grew to five strokes. He later hit three consecutive birdies from No. 11, finishing strong with pars for the rest of the round.
Marcus Armitage from England, who led after the first two rounds, ended in second place with a score of 18-under. Spanish player David Puig claimed third with a score of 15-under.
Del Rey expressed his gratitude for the win, saying, “I’ve always felt I could close out tournaments well. Today felt natural and easy.” This victory marks a significant milestone in his career, setting the stage for more successful tournaments ahead.
