Alex Cooper, the host of Call Her Daddy, reveals her painful past in her new Hulu doc, Call Her Alex. In the first part, she discusses being sexually harassed by her former soccer coach, Nancy Feldman, during her time at Boston University.
Cooper, who excelled in soccer and earned a scholarship, describes how her experience changed in her sophomore year. “Everything really shifted,” she recalls. Feldman’s behavior became oddly focused on Cooper, with comments about her body and questions about her personal life. It felt less like coaching and more like an invasion.
Despite trying to steer clear of Feldman, Cooper faced retaliation that impacted her time on the team. She recalls, “It was this psychotic game of you wanna play? Tell me about your sex life.” This led to her being benched during games and ultimately being kicked off the team her senior year.
In her documentary, Cooper reveals that her complaints were largely ignored by university officials. She graduated in 2017, while Feldman retired in 2022. This dismissal of her experience is a reflection of broader issues within institutions when it comes to addressing sexual harassment.
In a Q&A session after the premiere, Cooper expressed the challenges many women face when coming forward with their stories. She said, “If I have the finances for a lawyer, how is someone else going to feel comfortable?” Her journey highlights the obstacles women encounter, from denial to feelings of shame.
According to a 2022 survey from the American Association of University Women, nearly one in five college women experience sexual assault. Unfortunately, many cases go unreported due to fear and stigma. Cooper’s story emphasizes the need for change and conversation around these issues. She hopes her platform inspires others to speak out, asserting, “Conversation is the only way that we’re going to actually have change.”
In an era where movements like #MeToo have begun to reshape the narrative about these experiences, Cooper’s brave decision to share her story adds another critical voice to the ongoing discussion.
