“I’m not going to share everything,” Ovechkin said. “But my main focus is the playoffs. If we’re not competing for the Cup, I’ll have to consider other factors—like family and health.” This past season marked a low point for the Capitals; they missed the playoffs for just the fifth time in Ovechkin’s 21-year career. At the trade deadline, they made significant roster changes to build for the future, trading players like John Carlson and Nic Dowd.
Ovechkin isn’t just thinking about the team. His sons, Sergei and Ilya, are keen for him to stick around in D.C. “They’re excited and want me to come back,” he revealed. It’s clear his family’s support plays a role in his decision-making process.
