TALLAHASSEE – Florida State sophomore forward Alier Maluk is dedicated to improving his game this summer. He’s focusing on ball handling, shooting, passing, defense, and his overall mindset—skills he’s worked on since he picked up a basketball at age nine.
Maluk made a pivotal decision for his basketball future right after his freshman season. He confidently announced on social media, “Here To Stay,” showing his commitment to Coach Luke Loucks and the team. This declaration turned him into a key player for Seminole basketball.
“Florida State feels like home,” Maluk said. “Coach Loucks and his staff feel like family. They’ve taught me so much about life and leadership, not just basketball.”
In his freshman year, Maluk played in 31 of 32 games, averaging almost 11 minutes per game. His role grew as the season progressed, especially during ACC matchups. He played all 20 regular-season games in the conference and started against top teams like Duke and Virginia, where he scored a season-high eight points.
Coach Loucks, who became the eighth head coach of the Florida State program in March 2025, wanted Maluk on his roster. “Alier showed great maturity last season,” Loucks remarked. “He’s an excellent athlete with a strong feel for the game and is dedicated to his development.”
Originally part of the Class of 2025, Maluk reclassified to join Florida State a year early. While it wasn’t always the plan, he believes the choice was right for him and his family, especially considering his accelerated development in high school.
“The fact that Alier joined us early highlights his potential,” said Loucks. “We’re eager to work with him.”
This spring and summer, Maluk has honed his skills and is eager for the season opener on November 4. “I’ve learned to be patient,” he shared. “It’s important to appreciate my opportunities here.”
Shooting is another area Maluk is focusing on, despite his impressive 55% shooting accuracy last season, which rose to nearly 64% against ACC opponents.
“My coaches have helped me refine my shooting form and improve my ball handling under pressure,” he said. “These skills will be crucial.”
He’s also working with strength coach Ben O’Donnell to improve his conditioning. “I’m excited to show my skills this season and learn from such knowledgeable coaches,” Maluk added.
Balancing athletics with academics, Maluk achieved a 3.0 GPA in his first semester and earned an A in his public administration class. He was recognized on the All-ACC Academic Men’s Basketball Team. Education is a priority for him and his family, with his parents emphasizing its importance among their nine children.
“Being named to the All-ACC team was special for me,” Maluk said. “I’m grateful for that recognition.”
With promising prospects in both basketball and his studies, Alier Maluk is poised for a bright future at Florida State.
