Alliant University Unveils Inspirational Statue Honoring Viktor Frankl: A Tribute to Resilience and Hope

Dr. Viktor Frankl, a renowned psychologist and the author of Man’s Search for Meaning, is set to be honored with a 15-foot statue at Alliant International University in San Diego. This unveiling will take place on Friday and aims to celebrate his impactful legacy.

Frankl’s life was extraordinary; he survived three concentration camps during World War II. His experiences led him to teach that true freedom lies in our ability to make responsible choices, no matter the circumstances. He once said, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any situation.” This philosophy can resonate in our lives today, especially in an age where personal responsibility is frequently discussed.

In his public speeches, Frankl often expressed that the East Coast’s Statue of Liberty should be complemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast. This idea inspired sculptor Gary Lee Price to create a grand vision: a 300-foot Statue of Responsibility, with a smaller 15-foot version now being built in Frankl’s honor.

Public interest in the statue reflects a growing desire for deeper meanings in our lives, not just in freedom but also in the responsibilities that come with it. Recent surveys indicate that people today place a high value on community and collective well-being, suggesting they are seeking deeper social connections. Statues, like Frankl’s, can serve as powerful reminders of our shared human duties.

The ceremony for the statue will be an opportunity for introspection and discussion about these values. It will take place at 10:30 a.m. between the theater and Daley Hall, offering everyone a chance to reflect on what responsibility means in their own lives.
