Alpena — Kaelyn Roznowski, a senior at Alpena High School, has set up a Little Food Pantry right on campus. This pantry is there for anyone who needs it, anytime.
Kaelyn was inspired to create the pantry after attending the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Washington Leadership Conference. Each year, Alpena FFA sends two members to this event to help them develop leadership skills and learn how to make a difference.
At the conference, Kaelyn discovered the “Living to Serve” plan, which motivates students to think of community service projects. She saw a real need. “Growing up in Alpena, I’ve seen classmates struggle with food insecurity,” Kaelyn shared. “I wanted to give back, and my idea blossomed into the Little Food Pantry.”
The pantry is stocked with canned goods and non-perishable items gathered during the “Can-Do Challenge,” a food drive where various FFA chapters created a farm scene using the collected food. Over 500 pounds of food were donated by FFA members, students, and community supporters, all of which now help fill Kaelyn’s pantry.
Food pantries like Kaelyn’s are becoming vital across the country. According to a recent report from Feeding America, food insecurity affects 1 in 8 people in the U.S., including many students. Initiatives like these not only provide immediate relief but also foster a sense of community among students and families.
Kaelyn’s project highlights the importance of peer support in schools. When students feel safe and supported, they perform better academically and socially. Schools are increasingly recognizing that addressing basic needs leads to better outcomes. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
The Little Food Pantry is eager for more donations. If you’re interested in contributing, reach out to Alpena FFA Advisor Melissa Smith at smithmm@alpenaschools.com or call her at 989-358-5223.
Kaelyn’s initiative isn’t just about food; it’s about fostering a caring community where everyone looks out for each other. This kind of grassroots effort can spark more significant change and leads us toward a future where no one goes hungry.
