Alumna Kristina Schaeffer ’04 Takes on Chaplain Role at Susquehanna University: A New Era of Spiritual Leadership

Susquehanna University has appointed Rev. Kristina “Stina” Schaeffer as its new chaplain and director of Religious & Spiritual Life, starting December 1. With over 15 years in ministry, she is excited to join this vibrant campus community and support students in their spiritual journeys.

Schaeffer, a 2004 graduate of Susquehanna, comes back from her role as assistant to the bishop for the Upper Susquehanna Synod. There, she has helped pastors and congregations navigate periods of change and reflection. Since 2017, she has led Salem Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove, where she focused on worship and spiritual growth.

“Susquehanna holds a special place in my heart,” she said. “I’m eager to return and walk alongside students as they explore big questions about faith and life.”

Her experience includes developing retreats at Camp Koinonia in New York, where she crafted inclusive worship experiences for diverse audiences. María L. O. Muñoz, the university’s chief diversity officer, expressed her enthusiasm for Schaeffer’s return. She praised Schaeffer’s ability to foster belonging and support all students.

Schaeffer holds a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and a Bachelor of Arts in music from Susquehanna. Her return to her alma mater emphasizes a growing trend in educational spaces, where institutions are increasingly prioritizing inclusive spiritual support for students.

According to a recent survey by the American Council on Education, nearly 75% of students prefer institutions that value diversity and inclusivity in their spiritual and religious programming. Schaeffer’s vision aligns with these findings, promising a welcoming and supportive environment for all.

It’s clear that her leadership could greatly impact student life at Susquehanna University, creating a space where questions of faith and purpose can be explored openly.
