Alwar Youth’s Escape from Cyber Slavery in Myanmar
Aman, a young man from Alwar, recently escaped a harrowing situation known as “cyber slavery” in Myanmar. His experience highlights the dangers many face when seeking overseas job opportunities. With job scarcity at home, the lure of high salaries abroad seems tempting but can lead to unexpected horrors.
Aman’s nightmare began on September 5, 2025. Agents promised him a well-paying job in Myanmar. But the day after he arrived, things took a dark turn. He was forced to sign a one-year contract and had his passport confiscated. Instead of a legitimate job, he was pushed into online fraud. His task? To deceive Indian-Americans through social media.
Aman learned that around 270 Indian youths, including over 20 from Rajasthan, managed to return home safely after being rescued by the Myanmar Army. They reached out to the Indian Embassy for help, which coordinated their return. Sadly, many brokers exploit the desperation of young people, charging them hefty sums for job placements, only to hand them over to criminal enterprises.
Aman explained how these fraudsters operate. They create fake profiles, often impersonating women on social media, to lure people into investing via trading apps. Once victims transfer their money using cryptocurrency, it vanishes.
He noted the international scope of this scheme. Young people from India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan find themselves trapped in similar circumstances, often under severe pressure to meet targets set by their employers in high-tech call centers.
This issue of cyber slavery touches on a broader concern about international human trafficking. According to a 2021 report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, more than 60% of trafficking victims globally are exploited for sexual or labor purposes. Like Aman, many victims seek better lives but end up in dire situations.
