Breakfast on Amanda Seyfried’s farm in Upstate New York starts with tending to her animals—horses, goats, and her beloved 35-year-old pony, Cliff. “It’s grounding,” she says. “It helps me focus on what truly matters.”
When I asked what draws her to this rural life, she mentioned Hollywood’s challenges. “It’s a tricky place with a lot of personalities. This farm is exactly what I’ve always wanted.”
Her connection to the land runs deep. On rainy nights, she still cares for her animals, despite how she might look. “I just didn’t look as nice,” she joked.
Seyfried has had memorable roles, from Karen in “Mean Girls” to Sophie in “Mamma Mia!” In 2020, she took on a different kind of challenge, playing Marion Davies in “Mank,” earning her an Oscar nomination.
She thrives on challenges. “Each role is a new chapter for me,” she explained. “I have enough insight to know my limits, and I’ve got the support to keep me balanced.”
Her latest work includes two films. In “The Housemaid,” a psychological thriller, she stars alongside Sydney Sweeney. In “The Testament of Ann Lee,” Seyfried portrays the founder of the Shakers, a religious sect focused on equality and community. “Her conviction was everything,” she said. “She envisioned a utopia of teamwork, which is so relevant today.”
The Venice Film Festival celebrated her performance, giving the cast a standing ovation. Reflecting on her career, Seyfried said, “I’ve worked hard and stayed true to myself.” She admits mistakes are part of being human. “But I try to be nice, always.”
Seyfried’s journey began in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She pursued acting early, even modeling, but her first big role was on the soap “All My Children.” After getting written off, she was uncertain about her future. “I thought acting was over for me,” she remembered. “But then, I auditioned for ‘Mean Girls,’ and everything changed.”
Looking ahead, she hopes for a third “Mamma Mia!” film. “I think if we all agreed to do it for free, they’d jump on it,” she laughed.
In addition to acting, Seyfried is open about her struggles with anxiety and OCD. “I’ve learned to channel it creatively,” she said, attributing part of her success to her ability to manage these challenges.
Now approaching 40, she’s married to fellow actor Thomas Sadoski, with two kids. Her daughter often keeps her company while she plays guitar.
At home on the farm, surrounded by family and animals, Seyfried embraces a grounded life. “I feel at home here. I have nothing to prove,” she says, her honesty making her relatable.
