HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Amari Cooper, a five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, announced his retirement on Thursday. This comes just over a week after he signed a one-year deal to return to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Raiders’ offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly, shared that Cooper called head coach Pete Carroll that morning to break the news. “It’s unfortunate because I think the world of him,” Kelly remarked. “He’s a great player with an impressive career. But he knows what he wants, so I wish him the best. I’ve always admired him.”

At 31 years old, Cooper had a successful 10-season run across four teams. He finished with 711 catches, over 10,000 yards, and 64 touchdowns. Cooper was drafted fourth overall in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. In October 2018, he made a significant move to the Dallas Cowboys, who traded a first-round pick for him. He crossed the 1,000-yard mark in receiving for seven seasons, with his most recent impressive season being two years ago when he played for Cleveland, totaling 1,250 yards and five touchdowns.

Last season, Cooper recorded 44 catches for 547 yards and four touchdowns while playing for the Browns and Buffalo Bills. Just days before his retirement, he expressed his determination to prove he was still among the league’s elite receivers. “Trust me, I still have some juice left,” he stated.

As for his role with the Raiders, details were still in the works. Coach Carroll mentioned that Cooper had shown promise in practices, but the coaching staff hadn’t finalized the game plans for the season opener against New England.
