Amazon has just signed two Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) in India, totaling 199MW across two wind projects. This move shows Amazon’s commitment to renewable energy in the country.
The first agreement is with CleanMax for a 100MW onshore wind project in Koppal, Karnataka. CleanMax is known for its focus on sustainable energy. They expect this project to start generating power by the second quarter of 2026, producing around 355 million kWh each year once operational.
Kuldeep Jain, managing director at CleanMax, expressed excitement over this collaboration, highlighting how it helps Amazon reduce its carbon footprint and supports the growth of green energy. CleanMax has 2GW of renewable assets across Asia and recently secured $360 million in funding from Brookfield, an alternative asset manager.
CleanMax has a history of signing PPAs with tech companies. For example, they partnered with Equinix for a 33MW project in Maharashtra last November and made a PPA with Meta in 2021, marking Meta’s first agreement in India.
The second PPA is with BluPine Energy for a 99MW wind project. BluPine will supply Amazon with 360GWh of energy annually, though details about the project’s duration and location are still under wraps.
Neerav Nanavaty, CEO of BluPine, mentioned that the partnership with Amazon underscores their ability to develop impactful renewable energy projects. BluPine aims to grow its portfolio to 1GW within the commercial sector, supporting a shift towards cleaner energy.
With this new agreement, BluPine reaches a total of 3GW of renewable capacity, which includes 1GW already operating across 30 sites in nine Indian states. Founded in 2021 by Actis, a firm focusing on sustainable infrastructure, BluPine is making strides in the renewable energy sector.
Amazon has already invested significantly in renewable projects in India. In Rajasthan, they have supported three solar projects, adding up to 420MW. They also have a 198MW wind farm in Osmanabad, Maharashtra.
As India’s data center market grows, big players like Amazon are increasing their investments. Recently, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced an $8.3 billion plan to develop cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra. AWS first entered India in 2016, launching its Mumbai cloud region, and expanded with another region in Hyderabad in 2022.
