Amazon has reportedly spent over $1 billion to gain creative control of the James Bond franchise. This move has sparked various reactions from those involved with the films.

On Thursday, Amazon MGM Studios announced a deal with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. They are the guardians of the Bond legacy, following in the footsteps of their predecessor, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli.

As part of this agreement, Amazon will manage the James Bond intellectual property. While the exact financial details remain private, sources indicate that they paid around $1 billion for control over the iconic character.

Daniel Craig, who played Bond in recent films starting with “Casino Royale” in 2006, expressed his support for Broccoli and Wilson. He stated, “My respect, admiration, and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished.” Craig also wished Wilson a relaxing retirement and hopes to participate in future projects with Broccoli.

However, not everyone is thrilled with the news. Valerie Leon, a former Bond girl from films like “The Spy Who Loved Me” and “Never Say Never Again,” voiced her concerns. She worries that if Amazon holds the reins, Bond might lose his British essence. Leon mentioned that the franchise has always been very British, and with this change, the films could feel different.

With Amazon now in charge, they can create new films and possibly spin-off series without needing approval from Broccoli and Wilson. This is a significant change since these two have safeguarded the character’s legacy since he was created by Ian Fleming in 1953.

It’s been four years since the last Bond film, “No Time To Die.” As there are no new projects in the pipeline, Bond is currently on what could become his longest break yet.
