Amazon MGM Studios is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to redefine entertainment. They recently announced the GenAI Creators’ Fund, aiming to provide support to filmmakers and digital creators to produce high-quality TV shows and movies. This initiative is a collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), introducing a new AI production platform focused on enhancing visual storytelling.
Albert Cheng, the COO of Amazon MGM Studios, emphasized, “We’re human-centric. AI tools are designed to boost human creativity, enabling projects that were previously unimaginable.”
The fund has already kickstarted three animated series for Prime Video: “Punky Duck” by Jorge R. Gutierrez, “Love, Diana Music Hunters” from Albie Hecht, and “Cupcake & Friends” by BuzzFeed Studios. Although premiere dates aren’t set yet, these projects showcase the potential of AI in entertainment.
At the launch event for their initiative, Cheng kept details about funding under wraps, but said that grantees would create pilots to demonstrate their ideas. The studio will evaluate these to decide on full project development. Notably, all AI-enabled projects will involve human actors, reinforcing the human touch in storytelling.
The platform, called Project Nara, offers a unique workspace for selected creators. It integrates AI tools with traditional production software like Maya and Unreal Engine, allowing creators to merge various technologies. Cheng noted that one common concern from creators is that existing AI tools don’t meet specific needs. Project Nara aims to address this by making advanced AI tools more user-friendly for the industry.
Interestingly, early reports suggest that AI might help reduce production costs and time. With their initial partners, Amazon is pushing for a quick turnaround, aiming for pilot completion in just five weeks. This speed allows for creative adjustments earlier in the process, which could lead to more refined storytelling.
Samira Panah Bakhtiar from AWS highlighted Amazon’s unique position as both a studio and a tech company. “Amazon has created a comprehensive AI content creation ecosystem, from funding to distribution,” she explained.
