Amazon to Close Its Android App Store: What This Means for Users and Developers

Amazon is ending its Android app store on August 20 this year. They have informed developers that new app submissions will stop.

Additionally, Amazon will also discontinue its Coins digital currency, which users could spend on games and apps in the store.

“Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device.
We will also be discontinuing the Amazon Coins program on August 20, 2025,” Amazon shared on a support page.

Users will get refunds for any coins they have as of August 20.

The app store will still work on Amazon’s own devices, like Fire TV and Fire Tablets.

So far, Amazon hasn’t answered questions about why they decided to close the app store.

Since 2011, Amazon has been trying to create its own app store to compete with Google’s. They also attempted to support this effort through their unsuccessful Fire Phone.

Last year, Amazon announced that it would stop supporting its app store on Windows, which allowed Android apps, starting March 5, 2025. This program for Windows started in 2021.
