Amid US-Israel-Iran Tensions, India Keeps Fuel Prices Stable and Secures Oil Supply Amid Global Surge

India’s Fuel Situation Amid Global Tensions

India is currently facing a challenge as international crude oil prices soar. Despite crude prices surpassing $100 per barrel, the Indian government has chosen to keep petrol and diesel prices steady for now. Officials aim to ensure continuous fuel supply and avoid panic buying, especially in light of rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

As Brent crude briefly climbed to around $120 per barrel—about 65% higher than pre-conflict levels—concerns have emerged about inflation and supply chain disruptions. For countries like India, which rely heavily on oil imports, these price spikes can impact both the economy and everyday life.

To counter potential panic, the government has adjusted the booking system for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) refills. The waiting period has increased from 21 to 25 days. This change aims to manage inventories and discourage hoarding. On average, a typical Indian household uses around seven to eight LPG cylinders annually, meaning most families only need refills every six weeks.

A senior official reassured that there’s currently no shortage of LPG in the country. “The oil companies have sufficient inventories,” they confirmed, emphasizing that the waiting period change is just precautionary.

Monitoring Global Risks

The Indian government is closely observing global energy markets, especially after events like the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets. Such actions have heightened tensions and affected oil transportation routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for oil supplies. Approximately 40-50% of India’s crude oil imports pass through this narrow corridor.

Despite these challenges, officials report that India’s fuel situation is stable. With domestic petrol pumps and gas stations operational, there’s no immediate cause for concern. India imports about 88% of its crude oil, which can lead to higher costs during global price hikes. Still, the current strategy aims to keep fuel prices stable for now.

Price Freeze Policy

India has effectively frozen retail fuel prices since April 2022. During this time, state-run oil companies absorbed price fluctuations to keep consumer costs stable. This approach allows companies to recover their profits during lower price periods, creating a financial cushion. In the last financial year, these companies recorded substantial profits, indicating that they can withstand current price pressures.

Exploring Alternative Sources

To further shield itself from supply disruptions, India has broadened its sources for crude oil imports over recent years. If there are issues with Gulf imports, India can turn to suppliers from regions like Russia. However, finding alternative sources for LPG is more challenging due to distance and higher shipping costs.

To mitigate risks, the government encourages local refiners to produce more LPG and restricts diverting it for petrochemicals. This ensures better domestic availability and reduces reliance on international supplies.

No Need for Strategic Reserves Yet

Currently, the government sees no need to tap into strategic petroleum reserves, typically reserved for significant disruptions. They believe existing stocks are enough to meet demands in transportation and households.

Strengthening Supply Resilience

To bolster supply robustness, Indian energy companies are looking to increase LPG imports from North America. Aviation fuel supplies are also reported to be adequate, ensuring that airlines won’t face disruptions in the near future.

With all these measures in place, the government remains vigilant, ready to adapt policies if the global situation worsens.
