Democrat Analilia Mejia has clinched a significant win in a special election for the US House from New Jersey, beating Republican Joe Hathaway with a strong message against Donald Trump. Mejia, who previously led the Working Families Alliance and garnered support from Senator Bernie Sanders, will fill the seat left by Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill until January.
This victory means Democrats maintain a crucial seat in the 11th district, an area where Republicans have a slim edge. It comes as part of a broader trend of Democratic wins as the midterm elections approach. The race was called for Mejia just minutes after polls closed.
Emerging from a competitive primary in February, Mejia framed her campaign as a referendum on Trump’s leadership. Both candidates may face off again in November for a full two-year term. The 11th district, covering parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties, has shifted politically over the years. Once a Republican stronghold, its demographics have changed, leaning more Democratic since Trump’s presidency.
Historically, the district was a key area where Democrats gained ground during the 2018 midterm elections, flipping numerous seats and gaining control of Congress. Sherrill had a comfortable re-election in 2024, winning by about 15 points, while Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, secured the district by nearly nine points.
Voter sentiment is also evolved. Saran Cunningham, an 86-year-old retired educator, shared her initial hesitance about supporting Mejia due to concerns over her progressive views. However, she changed her mind, stating, “I think we’ve been tilting a little bit more to the right lately. We need people in Congress who will fight for things that help people.”
Mejia’s background further boosts her credibility. She has been a consistent advocate for progressive issues, once serving as Sanders’ political director during his 2020 campaign and later as the deputy director in the Labor Department’s Women’s Bureau under the Biden administration. Besides Sanders, her campaign earned endorsements from notable figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Elizabeth Warren.
