Analysts Predict Nintendo Will Emerge as Top Partner for Third-Party Game Publishers in Next Generation

Nintendo is expected to become the top choice for third-party game publishers in about five years, thanks to the anticipated success of the Switch 2. An analyst firm, DFC Intelligence, predicts that by then, the console could hit 100 million units sold.

In a recent report, DFC shared their predictions about Nintendo’s sales performance this year. While the company aims to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles by March 2026, DFC suggests that the actual sales could reach around 16 million. If supply chain issues improve, numbers could even climb to 20 million.

Nintendo tends to be conservative with its sales forecasts. When the original Switch launched in March 2017, Nintendo projected 10 million units but ended up selling 15 million. This track record gives analysts confidence that the Switch 2 can meet and exceed expectations.

With the delay of Grand Theft Auto VI to 2026, the Switch 2 is set to be a key player in gaming this year, particularly in Japan. The console will have a competitively priced model aimed at that market.

Looking ahead, DFC believes that the Switch 2 will solidify its spot as a leading console by 2029. Interestingly, both Sony and Microsoft are exploring their handheld devices and next-gen home consoles, likely set to launch around 2027. However, Nintendo’s early launch of the Switch 2 gives it a significant advantage.

Currently, the Nintendo Switch has sold about 152 million units in eight years. In comparison, the PlayStation 5 stands at 74.9 million units after four and a half years, while Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S is estimated at 30 million but lacks official numbers.

Historically, only seven console platforms have surpassed 100 million units, with Nintendo holding more than half of that record: Game Boy/Color, Nintendo DS, Wii, and now Switch. The PlayStation 2 still reigns as the best-selling console with around 160 million units, but the original Switch is closing in, being less than 8 million units away.

As the gaming landscape shifts, the excitement surrounding the Switch 2 shows how competitive and dynamic this industry can be. With changing consumer preferences and trends, the next few years promise to be thrilling for gamers and developers alike.
