Anambra State is gearing up to tackle the flooding problem it faces each rainy season. The state government, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has launched an initiative called “Operation Clear Your Waterways.” This plan aims to ensure that water flows freely through drainage channels, helping to prevent flooding.

Dr. Felix Odimegwu, the Commissioner for Environment, announced that the enforcement will start on March 31, 2025. He pointed out that this effort aligns with the state’s vision to become a smart mega city. The initiative is part of broader public health and environmental management laws designed to protect communities.
A key motive for this operation is a forecast from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. They predict that Anambra will face early and heavy rains this year, making it critical to act now to reduce the risk of flooding.
Odimegwu emphasized a strict “zero-tolerance” policy towards blocked drains. He called on various community groups—including churches, schools, and market unions—to pitch in. Their cooperation is essential for desilting and clearing water channels in their areas to ensure that rainwater can flow easily.
In 2023, flooding caused substantial damage across Nigeria, illustrating the urgency of this initiative. The World Bank reported that in some areas, flood damage has risen dramatically, underscoring the need for proactive measures. The Anambra government aims to avoid similar situations this year by involving everyone in the cleaning effort.
Odimegwu also made it clear that those who fail to comply with these regulations will face enforcement actions and penalties. He insisted that any debris cleared must be immediately removed from adjacent roads to keep the environment clean.
The goal is simple yet impactful: to create a safer, cleaner, and healthier Anambra State. By working together as a community, residents can make a significant difference and mitigate the risks of flooding and the diseases that can come with it.
Let’s hope this initiative paves the way for better preparation and resilience against future weather challenges.
