In a recent chat with The Razor’s Edge, Andrea Ferro, the co-vocalist of LACUNA COIL, shared how technology has changed the music scene. He noted, “We had to learn a lot. The shift from analog to digital is huge for everyone. Our new album is called ‘Sleepless Empire’, which reflects how society has transformed. We’re connected all the time, yet sometimes it feels like we’re losing touch with real life.”
He continued, “Everyone’s glued to screens, even at night. It’s not just a young people’s issue; we’ve all experienced it. Luckily, I remember a simpler time before the Internet, and I appreciate that.” Ferro explained that while they still sell physical albums—especially in metal, where vinyl and collector’s editions thrive—they’ve adapted to the shifting music industry, exploring new revenue streams like sponsorships and merchandise.
“Sleepless Empire” will drop on February 14, 2025, through Century Media Records.
Cristina Scabbia, also co-vocalist, discussed the album’s title in an interview with Kerrang! In Conversation. “It represents today’s world,” she explained. “We’re always trying to be productive and connected but also feel disconnected and anxious.” Scabbia feels the pressure to be present online, saying it’s not a criticism but a shared experience. She sees the beauty in technology, allowing conversations to happen despite distance: “It saves time and allows us to focus on what really matters.”
She also reflected on the challenges it brings, especially for younger generations who might struggle with comparison. “Social media often isn’t real. It’s important to focus on our own lives instead of comparing to others,” she advised.
Scabbia admitted she often reaches for her phone first thing in the morning. “I’m guilty of it. But I also see it as research. I need to know what’s happening,” she said. Yet, she recognizes the cycle of anxiety technology can create. “We work hard but then seek relaxation online, which can make things worse.”
Inspiration for “Sleepless Empire” came during the making of “Comalies XX” in northern Italy. The album features 11 tracks, each crafted to evoke specific feelings and moments. The band describes it as a reflection of a chaotic digital world where individuals try to reclaim their identities.
LACUNA COIL has recently welcomed Daniele Salomone as their new guitarist, taking over from Diego Cavallotti, who left in June 2024. Salomone made his debut performance with the band at the Rockstadt Extreme Fest in Romania.
