Andrew Cuomo Eyes Political Comeback: Could He Become NYC’s Next Mayor?

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced his run for mayor of New York City. This marks his attempt to re-enter politics after stepping down in 2021 amid serious sexual harassment allegations.

In a 17-minute video, Cuomo presents himself as a moderate leader ready to restore order in a city he describes as “out of control.” He claims he can work with Republican leaders when necessary, emphasizing his past achievements as governor.

Cuomo is known for his robust fundraising abilities and his record from three terms as governor. However, his past scandal shadows him as he competes against a crowded field of Democratic candidates, including current Mayor Eric Adams, who himself is under federal investigation.

Many voters may be hesitant to support Cuomo after his dramatic fall from grace. He went from being praised for his COVID-19 response to facing accusations of misconduct. In his video, he admits to making “mistakes” but stops short of addressing the harassment claims directly.

Adams welcomed Cuomo back to the political arena, saying he looks forward to a competitive race. Cuomo, who has long hinted at a comeback, has faced numerous allegations, including accusations of unwanted touching and inappropriate comments from at least 11 women. While a sexual assault claim against him was dropped for lack of evidence, the ongoing legal battles have cost taxpayers millions.

Some of Cuomo’s former accusers are still vocal about their concerns. Lindsey Boylan, the first woman to publicly accuse him of harassment, expressed in a recent essay that New York deserves better leadership. She criticized Cuomo for not taking full responsibility for his actions and for waging a legal war against his accusers.

Cuomo will compete against several candidates in the Democratic primary, all aiming to unseat Adams. Contenders include city Comptroller Brad Lander and state Senators Zellnor Myrie and Jessica Ramos, among others. Ramos has labeled Cuomo a “corrupt bully,” while Myrie believes New Yorkers should not have to revisit his past controversies.

Adams, meanwhile, faces his own challenges, fighting federal corruption charges related to campaign financing. Critics speculate about deals he may have made for legal protection, an allegation he denies. With pressure mounting from the public and even from within his administration, Adams is in a vulnerable position.

Cuomo’s political journey started with his father, former Gov. Mario Cuomo. He rose to prominence, particularly during the pandemic, where his daily briefings attracted a large following and earned him accolades. However, the subsequent accusations led to his resignation and serious scrutiny over his leadership style and decisions, particularly concerning COVID-19 in nursing homes.

As Cuomo embarks on his campaign, questions about his ability to regain the public’s trust linger. His once-celebrated leadership has become a complex tapestry of achievements and controversies that will define his path forward.
