Phillies manager Rob Thomson recently shared the team’s starting rotation with reporters, confirming that Cristopher Sánchez will kick off the season on Opening Day. He’ll be followed by Aaron Nola, Jesús Luzardo, Taijuan Walker, and Andrew Painter making his Major League debut in the fifth game.
This news isn’t surprising. Zack Wheeler is still recovering from surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome and will start the season on the injured list. Given this situation, it was clear that these five pitchers would be stepping up.
Painter’s debut is exciting. Once hailed as one of the top pitching prospects, he was the 13th overall pick in the 2021 draft. In 2022, he had an impressive minor league ERA of 1.56 and even reached Double-A. Unfortunately, elbow issues in March 2023 halted his progress; he underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2023 and 2024 seasons.
He returned to the mound last year with average results, posting a 5.40 ERA over 22 Triple-A starts. While his strikeout rate hovered around 23.4%, his overall performance wasn’t as dominant as expected. However, at only 22, Painter still has plenty of time to shine. Previously listed among the top ten prospects, he’s now ranked between 25 and 50.
In spring training, Painter had a solid performance with a 2.31 ERA but a lower-than-desired strikeout rate of 18.6%. As the season progresses, changes in the rotation are likely. Wheeler’s recovery is nearing its end, and he’s scheduled to pitch in a minor league game soon.
When Wheeler returns, someone will need to be bumped from the rotation unless the Phillies choose to use a six-man setup. With options available, Painter could be sent back to Triple-A if necessary. However, if he outperforms Taijuan Walker, he might keep his spot. Walker has had experiences in the bullpen before, leaving that option open.
Painter’s presence on the Opening Day roster also has future implications. If he accumulates a full year of service time and achieves specific accolades, like winning Rookie of the Year or ranking high in Cy Young votes, the Phillies could receive a bonus draft pick through the Prospect Promotion Incentive.
