Google is stepping up its efforts to shield Android users from phone call scams. As part of this, the company will block users from sideloading apps during calls with unknown contacts. This means you can’t download an app from a web browser, messaging app, or any other service while on that call. Additionally, users will no longer be able to grant an app accessibility permissions while talking on the phone. If you attempt to change these settings during a call, a message will pop up saying, “This setting is blocked to protect your device.” This alert helps users be aware that scammers may manipulate them into allowing dangerous apps access to personal information.

Google’s Play Protect service already actively blocks users from disabling app security during calls. The company claims these upgrades work directly on the device and should help stop rough tactics that prompt users to download harmful apps.

There’s more. Google is also testing a feature targeting banking apps. Users in the UK will see a warning if they try to open banking apps while sharing their screens during calls. If the system suspects a scam, a pop-up will suggest that the user might be at risk and offer an “end call” option. If users ignore the warning, they’ll need to wait 30 seconds before continuing to share their screen.

These features add to Android’s ongoing commitment to scam protection. In the past year, the platform has been using AI to identify potential scammers and advises users to hang up if they seem suspicious. The AI has also been integrated into Google Messages, helping detect various types of scams, including fake toll collections and financial impersonations.
