International Development Minister Anneliese Dodds has stepped down because of cuts to the aid budget announced by the prime minister. In her resignation letter, she expressed deep concern that these cuts would take vital food and healthcare away from those in need, damaging the UK’s reputation globally.
Before resigning, Dodds waited until after Sir Keir Starmer’s meeting with President Trump. She felt it was important for the cabinet to present a united front during that critical time. Despite her departure, she noted that she recognized Starmer’s support for international development.
As part of his trip to meet Trump, Starmer revealed plans to reduce aid funding from 0.5% to 0.3% of the country’s gross national income by 2027. The intention behind this change is to boost defence spending. The prime minister stated that the decision was not made lightly, emphasizing that conflict is a major driver of issues like migration and poverty.
Dodds cautioned that these funding cuts could lead to the UK’s withdrawal from several important nations in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Western Balkans. During a time when Russia is enhancing its influence, this could leave the UK sidelined in crucial discussions. She warned that the cuts might lead to a diminished role in regional banks and a weakened voice in multi-national forums like the G7 and G20.
While Dodds supported the idea of increased defence spending, she had hoped for a balanced approach that would involve discussions on fiscal rules and taxation. Instead, she felt that the prime minister unfairly placed the burden on overseas development assistance without exploring other options.
