Boris Cherny, who leads Claude Code, disclosed this in a post on X, stating that users will need to rely on discounted usage bundles or obtain a separate API key for Claude.

The decision arises from the overwhelming demand for Claude’s services. Recently, Claude even topped the US Apple App Store. To manage this growing popularity, Anthropic had to impose new usage limits, indicating that the existing subscriptions were not adequate for the demand generated by third-party tools.

In a statement, an Anthropic spokesperson noted that using Claude with third-party applications contradicts their terms of service. These tools were putting excessive pressure on their systems—a critical concern as companies strive to manage resources efficiently.

Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, expressed disappointment over the sudden announcement. He and board member Dave Morin had attempted to negotiate with Anthropic, emphasizing how many users chose Claude specifically because of OpenClaw. Steinberger remarks, “It feels like they’re trying to bury the news.”
