Kimi Antonelli scored his first Formula 1 win at the Chinese Grand Prix, leaving his Mercedes teammate, George Russell, in second place. Lewis Hamilton, racing for Ferrari, secured his first podium in a thrilling battle against his teammate.
Antonelli got off to a great start after becoming the youngest Grand Prix polesitter just a day before. He slipped into the lead early on, reclaiming it by the second lap and holding strong despite a late scare when he nearly went off track.
He finished the race 5.5 seconds ahead of Russell, making him the second youngest winner in F1 history at just 19 years old. Russell had won the sprint race the day before and continued to lead the Drivers’ Championship despite coming in second.
Hamilton, chasing his first podium for Ferrari, faced tough competition from teammate Charles Leclerc throughout the race. The two drivers fought closely, but Hamilton eventually finished third.
Ollie Bearman from Haas placed fifth, followed closely by Pierre Gasly in sixth. Despite some early challenges, both drivers put in solid performances, with Bearman recovering from a near-spin in the opening laps.
Statistically, the race had its share of drama. Only 13 cars finished, with reigning champion Max Verstappen retiring late in the race due to car issues. Both Aston Martins and the McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, were unable to start due to mechanical problems. Reports show that reliability issues are becoming increasingly significant in this year’s F1 season.
In total, the race saw only 12 finishers, a stark contrast to past seasons where around 18-20 cars typically complete the race. This trend has caught the attention of fans and experts alike, who are debating the implications for team strategies and overall competition.
“I’m speechless. I’m about to cry, to be honest,” Antonelli said after his victory. “Thank you to my team for helping me achieve this dream.”
Looking ahead, F1 will take a short break before returning for the Japanese Grand Prix from March 27-29. For more updates, you can check out the F1 Race Hub.
