MLS’s streaming deal with Apple is changing significantly, concluding three and a half years earlier than planned. Initially set for a decade, these new terms position MLS to adapt quickly after the 2026 World Cup, enhancing interest in soccer across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Under the revised deal, MLS will receive $200 million for the 2026 season, followed by $107.5 million for a brief season in 2027. From 2028 to 2029, MLS is set to earn $275 million each season. This averages out to about $250 million for the three full seasons left, plus the $107.5 million for the short sprint season. Remarkably, this represents a $50 million increase compared to what they would have earned under the original terms.

Apple is also giving up its right to terminate the deal after the 2027 season. This shift allows MLS to explore media rights options sooner, which could lead to opportunities for a new deal post-World Cup.

MLS commissioner Don Garber considers these changes a win. Though neither Apple nor MLS commented on specifics, the partnership has already redefined sports viewership. By moving all MLS games to Apple TV, the league aims to broaden its audience, despite earlier criticism about games being behind a paywall.

This collaboration kicked off in 2022 and marked a bold move for MLS into the direct-to-consumer streaming space. Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of Services, previously expressed a desire for a long-lasting relationship with the league.

Alongside the financial updates, MLS is scheduling a league calendar change starting in July 2027. This new timing will help teams navigate the global transfer market better and align with international events like FIFA matches. Garber has called this shift “one of the most important decisions in our history.”

Moreover, Apple is working to increase its appeal to sports fans by incorporating Formula 1 rights, showing its commitment to enhancing the content on Apple TV.

As interest in soccer grows, the MLS-Apple partnership will likely influence the sports landscape in North America in significant ways. The changes reflect a broader trend where technology and sports are increasingly intertwined, offering fans accessible and innovative experiences.
